The Noirans Today

The Noirans black hen has inherited feathery legs and improved genes that give a generous production of highly colored eggs. The Noirans has the same characteristics as its ancestor the Marans hen. It is the result of crossbreeding between a local hen and older breeds from which it has inherited its robustness and plumage colors. Bred for robustness and high numbers of real quality dark brown eggs (rich dark chocolate colored brown eggs), the Noirans layers have a good appetite and an amenable temperament. These highly favorable genetic characteristics can only be fully realized when the bird is provided with proper management, which includes, but is not limited to good quality feed, good housing and proper management practice. Hendrix Genetics continues the development and conservation of the original strain on its R&D farms in the Côtes d'Armor region of France.

Heritage of the Noirans

The story of the Noirans begins with the story of the Marans hen. Appeared at the beginning of the 20th century, its country of origin is the village of Marans, in the Marais Poitevin in Charente Maritime. Several distinct colors in the plumage of the Marans hen corroborate the fact that an ancient strain of English fighting cock was present in local crossbreeds. In 1930, the Standards Commission of the SCAF (Société Centrale d'Aviculture de France) visited more than a hundred farms in the Marans region to define the standard of the breed. The first standard was registered in the general catalog of the SCAF in 1931. After decades of focusing predominantly on the Marans her phenotype, it is now time to focus on her performance whilst maintaining her beautiful looks. The Noirans trademark was registered on July 20, 2000. From 2010, Hendrix Genetics has contributed to the improvement of the Noirans layer and to the distribution of this specialty chicken breed in France and abroad.
